MSN Messenger

Instant messaging is widely used all over the world,and microsofts MSN is the hottest on the field.

you need to have a net. passport to use this service and also the msn software(the latest version is 7.5)

general quick look at the main features

in the main window

File

Sign out,to sign out of messenger

My Status(choose which u desire)

Go To
This will take you to the links provided there(msn homepage,ur inbox,and other links from your tabs)

Send File or Photo
To send a file to the existing online contacts(if you want to send to an account that is not added choose Other and type the email there)

Open Received files
This will take you directly to the file where you keep the received content,the defualt file is always in MY Documents but you can browse and choose a differant location

View message History

This can be done by:

tools>>Options>>Messages..
View msg history


IF you have chosen to log your conversations,here you'll find the file that contains them

To save your conversations

Go to>> tools >>options>> messages>>Message history

Contacts

Adding a new contact

Contacts<

Search for contacts

You can use msn spaces to search for contacts

My Spaces Search

Go to my address book
Click and it will take you there


View Displayed pictures
Choose if you want to see small,medium or large ones

Save Contac list..this will save your contacts on your computer for future reference

Import contacts from a file
You might need this if you lost your password,you will be asked for the names of some of your contacts to verify your email

Viewing your contacts

Contact list features include:
· Display pictures.
· Status icons to the left of each contact.
· Contact cards with the latest MSN Spaces information and links for each contact.
· Links to each contact's MSN Hotmail address book entry.
Sorting your contacts
You have several options for sorting your contact list. By default (An initial value or setting. A default value remains in effect until changed.) , your contacts are grouped according to their status:
· OnlineSigned in to MSN Messenger.
· Offline Not signed in to MSN Messenger or don't want to be disturbed.
· MobileMobile-enabled contacts who can receive messages on their mobile devices.

You can also organize your contacts into groups, such as:
· Coworkers
· Family
· Friends
· Other Contacts
You can also create custom groups to organize your contacts any way you want.


Sharing and transporting your contacts

You can save your contact list so you can share it with a friend or take it with you if you sign in to MSN Messenger using a different Microsoft Passport Network account.

Actions

Send an instant message(this is sent to an online contact)

here's a trick

Click on Other if you want to msg someone not on ur list,just type the email and surprise them

Send other

Email(this will open your email on compose

Send a messsge to mobile(for mobile users .you can identify them when you see a yellow msn icon near their nicks

Winks cannot be sent to offline contacts


Video and Audio conversations
Can be accessed from here also as well as the main window of your online contact


Tools

My Emoticons

Click on this and you can modify, add,or remove emoticons,
click on create then find image,open and choose any image,choose keyboard shortcut and convert it into an icon

Backgrounds
You can choose whatever u like as a background to ur chat window..you can find lots of new backgrounds on several sites and add them too

Change my display picture
This also can be done from clicking on personal setting in msn main window or by clicking on tools options personal

Important
Your display picture cannot be saved by others BUT if someone needed to save it it can be done easily so be careful!!

How can you save a display picture of a contact?

Click on print screen on your keyboard..open mspaint..paste..cut the picture.this also is helpful on websites where right click is disabled and you badly need an image stored.

Here you can access the winks on ur MSN and preview them

Windows media player
Show others what you are listening to on windows media player

here's how to activate this service
1.Check the box
2.go to windows media player(version 9 and above,u can check ur version of the player by clicking on about windows media plaer on help))
3.go to tools on windows media player>>pluggins>>and check msn messenger pluggin

My Display picture
You either choose others to view it or not,by checking the box you agree to share ur display picture

My public profile
Here you can edit ur profile,or creat one if u don't have it yet
Your public profile is as public as u wish it to be.open the permissions drop down menu and choose whom you want to share the profile with

My status
This will show u as away for the time u specify when idle

Show me as busy etc..
this will set ur status as busy when you are viewing a full screen programme like powerpoint presentation

my webcam
by choosing this others will see that you have a webcam installed

General

Sign in
Here you have four options

*Check the first box if you want messenger to start when u log on to windows
*The second to open main window when messenger starts

(I can see u can choose either the first or the second or both but u cannot
choose neither of them)


*Allow automatic sign in when connected to the internet(not highly recommended)

*Displaying pictures from others

Here you can choose whether to see others oics or not on the chat window or the main wondow,and what size u prefere them


Quality improvement
By clicking this u agree that Microsoft collects info about how you use msn(not recommended also)

Messages
by checking these boxes you choose how u want ur messages and ur contacts msgs to be displayed,ur text direction,and ur fonts


Voice clips:you can record ashort voice clip and it will be automatically sent to ur online contact.these clips can also be saved on ur computer and theirs


offline mobile msg setting
does not work in all countries(tried it myself)

message history
if u want to keep logs of ur conversations,check the box, and choose the folder where you want them yto be saved

handwriting
by checking this u enable the handwriting feature


Alerts and Sounds:
by checking these boxes MSN will alert you when a contact signs in,or when you receive an email or an Instant message.

Alerts can also audio(u can choose your sounds by clicking on Sounds

File Transfer

Here you can choose where to save received files and also which programme to scan these files

Automatic background sharing:

by choosing this box u agree to share whatever background u r using.

Phone

insert your mobile or home phone numbers.mobile numbers enable the offline messaging feature which as i said is not available for all countries

Tabs

tabs can be seen on your msn main window left pane,these tabs can make it easy for you to search the web,u can move ur tabs up and down as you find suitable

Privacy:

here you can see all ur contactseither in the Allow list or /blocked list

by checking the box(only those on my allow list can see my state and send me messages) you block all others from doing so

View:by clicking here you can see who added you on their messenger and those who deleted you

Alert me when other people add me:no one can add you without ur consent..check this box

Securtiy:

If you are using a shared computer,u shouldn't be checkinh the first 4 boxes(the third is not enabled so u have three to choose from

by checking these boxes anyone using the computer can access ur data,ur contacts,ur email and ur tabs

the last three boxes:

1st:allow voice clips to be sent received shared and temporerily stored:this is for the new option on MSN 7 and above,u can record a voice clip and it will be sent instantly >>so be carfeul

2nd: allow links in the conversation window: by checking this box any link sent to you will be enabled

now the last three boxes can be checked
